Types of Employment at UNLV Nevada System of Higher Education Work Service Program Program Overview Federal Work-Study, also referred to as FWS,
is one of six major student financial aid programs authorized under Title
IV of the Higher Education Act. It is designed to provide Student Requirements Must have financial aid eligibility Undergraduate enrollment requirement 6 credits/semester Graduate/Professional enrollment requirement 5 credits/semester Undergraduate cumulative GPA requirement 2.0 Graduate/Professional cumulative GPA requirement 3.0 May not replace or fill a permanent staff position Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident, or other eligible non-citizen with an I-94 card with an approved designation During the Summer sessions, students not planning to enroll may fill out a Notice of Intent if the above requirements are met for the previous Spring semester. America Reads/America Counts Program Overview The America Reads and America Counts programs are Federally funded and provide students with the opportunity to tutor preschool age children in reading and math. The federal funding covers 100% of the student’s wages. Students must be eligible for work-study in order to receive an America Reads/America Counts award. These awards are given to departments with close affiliation to preschool age children. Nevada System of Higher Education Work Service Program Program Overview The Nevada System of Higher Education Work Service Program (NSHE) is a state funded program which provides paid internships and employment placements. These placements must emphasize service and applied learning opportunities for students that make a contribution to the State of Nevada, the surrounding communities, or the University. Off Campus (PDF) Regular Student Employment Program Overview Departments are responsible for 100% of the student’s wages. Students do not need to qualify for financial aid in order to participate in regular student employment. Student Requirements Undergraduate GPA requirement 2.0 Graduate/Professional GPA requirement 3.0 Undergraduate enrollment requirement 6 credits/semester Graduate/Professional enrollment requirement 5 credits/semester Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent resident with an I-151 or an I-551, or an alien authorized by the Immigration and Naturalization Service to work in the United States. Refer to the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form for additional information. Summer Term Students not enrolled in the summer term may work during the summer term under regular student employment if they meet one of the following requirements: Student was enrolled for the minimum number of credits the previous spring semester Non-Student (160 Hour) Employment Program Overview Individuals employed by the University who are enrolled in less than six credit hours for undergraduate status or five credit hours for graduate status per semester are classified as Non-Student (160 hour) employees and are restricted to working a maximum of 160 hours during any calendar year. This is a one-time, temporary appointment and successive appointments are not allowed. Any questions regarding 160 hour or 1000 hour employment should be directed to Human Resources at 895-3504. |
