Federal Work-Study Monitoring of Eligibility and Earnings

The student and his/her supervisor should review the student’s hours of work and determine the available remaining hours.

If remaining funds are not sufficient to cover actual and/or anticipated work, the student should contact Financial Aid & Scholarships immediately. In some cases, the student’s work study award may be increased as a result of a review of the student’s income and expenses. In all cases, the student must cease working or be changed to regular student employment status once the amount of his/her federal work-study award has been earned.

Occasionally a student’s work-study allocation may increase or decrease due to changes in the student’s financial need amount. When a revision occurs, the student is notified of the amount of change. It is imperative that the student notify the employer of the change in allocation and that the employer make appropriate adjustments to the student’s working hours.

The amount of the work-study award will be recorded by Student Employment Services staff on the UNLV Employment Document. The supervisor should use this amount to determine the number of hours the student will be able to work each week throughout the semester.

(Award)/(Salary)/(# of weeks in the semester) = Hours per week available with work study award

Example:

($2000.00)/($7.00/hour)/(18 weeks) = 15.8 hours per week

Therefore, you could allow the student to work 15 hours per week. In this case the student would have $120.00 left of the work-study award. You can either use that money throughout the semester or it will be carried through to the next semester.

Students who have remaining funds from the Fall semester, may use the funds for the Spring semester as long as they are still eligible.
