Federal Work-Study Employment

Program Overview

Federal Work-Study, also referred to as FWS, is one of six major student financial aid programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act. It is designed to provide part-time employment to students who have established financial need according to Federal guidelines. Seventy-five percent of the student’s salary is paid by the Federal government; the remainder is paid by the employer. Financial Aid & Scholarships determines student eligibility based on the information provided on the student’s financial aid application. On-campus departments, government agencies, and non-profit off-campus agencies are eligible to hire work-study students.

Student Requirements

  • Must have financial aid eligibility
  • Undergraduate enrollment requirement 6 credits/semester
  • Graduate/Professional enrollment requirement 5 credits/semester
  • Undergraduate cumulative GPA requirement 2.0
  • Graduate/Professional cumulative GPA requirement 3.0
  • May not replace or fill a permanent staff position
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident, or other eligible non-citizen with an I-94 card with an approved designation

During the Summer sessions, students not planning to enroll may fill out a Notice of Intent if the above requirements are met for the previous Spring semester. This form is available at the front desk of Financial Aid & Scholarships.
