Advantages of Working Student employment is intended to be a learning experience and a productive activity that complement a student's academic career. Through student employment, students secure funds to finance their college education. In addition, students who work part-time gain important job skills, establish a work history, develop professional contacts, graduate in a timely manner, and perform better academically! In most jobs, students have the ability to arrange a work schedule around their classes. Working also allows students to earn money to pay for some of their indirect college expenses (e.g., rent and travel costs). Student Employment Eligibility For most student employment programs, students must be enrolled at least half-time (5 credits for graduate students and 6 credits for undergraduate students) and maintain a 2.00 undergraduate or a 3.00 graduate grade point average (GPA). International students must meet the GPA requirements above and are required by Immigration and Naturalization Services regulations to be enrolled full-time (12 undergraduate or 9 graduate credits). In addition, prior to employment each semester an international student must provide a work permit from International Student Services at UNLV.
